Contributor’s Corner

At the Region Spring Conference this month we’ll be ready to start talking about the Fall Leadership Retreat. Bring your checkbook to the Spring Conference for a special rate in the Fall. In case you’re not at the Spring Conference, here’s a teaser for you. The Leadership Retreat is on Nov 7-8 in the Pittsburgh area right across the road from a brand new outlet mall opening this coming Labor Day. Details now available on the 2008 Leadership Retreat website, http://www.aitp-pgh.org/R18-2008LR.htm.

Do you occasionally find yourself needing to create a PDF (Portable Document File) document from an MS Office application but not frequently enough to buy a full licensed copy of Adobe Acrobat? If you use Office 2007 (not sure about earlier versions), Microsoft has a free plug-in that will allow you to “Save as PDF” on all of its products except Outlook and Project. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=F1FC413C-6D89-4F15-991B-63B07BA5F2E5&displaylang=en for additional details and to download the plug-in.

There is also an excellent free or inexpensive (two versions) of a PDF writer named PDF995 from Software995. Go to http://www.software995.com/ for this and other software selling for $9.95. This works as a printer driver.

I personally use both of these products and find them to be excellent.

Two members of Region 18 were awarded Lifetime Memberships last year, John Hage from Columbus Chapter and Joe Krehlik Jr. of Greater Wheeling Chapter.

I had the pleasure of presenting John Hage of the Columbus Chapter with his Lifetime Individual Performance Award on Saturday, November 24th. John has been a member of the Columbus Chapter for 26 years and has represented them on the Region Board for that entire time. He was the Region 18 treasurer for 12 years and helped to keep us fiscally responsible. John always made the 50-50 Raffles a fun event and worth giving him your money. He enlisted the assistance of our youngest Region 18 members, the Edge family. John has re-located to the Toledo area to be near his biological family. His e-mail is still jhage@chopnik.com and he would welcome e-mails from his DPMA/AITP family.

This year 5 additional Region 18 members will be awarded Lifetime Memberships, Patricia McMurray and Denise Patrizio from Pittsburgh, and Barbara Shaver and Nick Reqopoulos from Akron Chapter, and Lance Kull from Tarheel Chapter.

The Region 18 Research Triangle Chapter held its monthly meeting on Thursday, April 10, with an executive  panel discussion on  “The Value of IT and the Need to Know Your Business”.  Rick Banks, VP of Programs,  moderated the event. Panelists from left to right are John W McCarley, Sr. VP –  BB&T Corporation,  Bruce Anderson, VP of IT Architecture and Data Integration Services – TIAA-CREF,  Chuck Musciano, CIO – Martin Marietta Materials,  Dr. Sam Bayer,  President and Founder –  MarketAcuity, and Charles Dail, Group VP of Central Bank Operations – First Citizens Bank.  The panelists are members of the RTP Chapter’s Management Advisory Council. (MAC).   Unique to the RTP Chapter is the high level of involvement with their MAC which takes an active role in providing direction to the chapter through annual forums where topics of interest to Chief Information Officers at local companies are shared with chapter leadership.  Annually, a panel discussion, comprised of members of the council discusses a current industry hot topic.

Bill Howe, a  current RTP member and 55-year member of the National Machine Accountants Association/DPMA/AITP received a special DPMA memorabilia pin and scarf. Presenting the gift at the April meeting is Brad Moses, AITP Association Eastern District Director and  past-President and current member of the RTP Chapter. Shown below is the CIO Panel.
